Globe Telecom recently released a prepaid WiFi device that can be used at home or almost anywhere. The Globe Home Prepaid WiFi is an LTE WiFi router that comes with a Globe prepaid SIM card and can be used at home or office if there’s no internet connection available.
The Globe Home Prepaid WiFi is priced at only Php1,999 and comes with a free 10GB worth of data. We got a hold of one and tested and here’s our review.
Design and Packaging
It comes is a simple box with Globe branding, the package includes Prepaid WiFi modem, LAN cable, power adapter, SIM card (already installed), user manual and warranty certificate. The device is actually small and portable it can even fit a small bag, it’s about 5-inches in size and it comes in white color.
There are LED lights indicator at the front for power, internet, wireless, LAN, and signal. At the top is a button that looks like a reset/restore button, there are also grills for ventilation.
Going to the back of the device are the LAN, and power port, there is a written instruction on How to re-load and the SIM number is also indicated but since it’s only a paper sticker so its a good idea to maybe put some plastic tape on it to protect it.
At the bottom of the device is the SIM card with a “Do not tamper” sticker by Globe. The SIM is already configured to work with the modem. It also has the information about the IMEI, MAC ID, serial number, SSID and the default WiFi Key, admin name, and password which can be configured later on.
Connecting to the Globe Home Prepaid WiFi can be done using a browser, so it’s better if you have a laptop or desktop at home. You can connect it using the included LAN cable for better connection, simply launched any browser and type in the default IP which is 192.168.1.1 at the address bar and it will ask for the default user ID and password that can be found at the bottom of the device.
Once login, you can skip the quick wizard to configure the password and other wireless functions, since this device is already pre-configured to work out of the box. But changing some of the security settings always a good idea.
It’s always a good practice to change the WiFi SSID and password to make sure others won’t be able to access your WiFi, also change the default Admin password so that no one can access your device.
It features built-in SMS function where you can send out SMS messages to subscribe to Globe GOSURF and SUPERSURF promos. The Phonebook page contains some of the preset contacts that you can use to check balance, reload and more.
The package comes with 10GB of data allocation good for 7 days. Then you need to reload it and subscribe to Globe surf promos.
The Globe Home Prepaid WiFi still uses mobile data to connect to the internet, so internet speed is still dependent on the location, some places my experience fast connection while others might not.
On an average daily use, we usually got a good signal and decent internet speed of around 3.5mbps on our location somewhere south of Metro Manila which does not have a good LTE coverage. But since this device has an LTE it should get speed up to 20mbps or more if the area has good LTE coverage.
We’re able to connect 5 wireless gadgets on this device and still got a decent internet speed for everyone. The WiFi works well and it’s easy to connect, just make sure that this device is a placed where it can get good LTE signal like near the windows of your house since it does not have an external antenna.
The Globe Prepaid Home WiFi is a good alternative internet connection at home but still, nothing beats the actual Fiber/DSL/cable internet connection and since it still depends on the location you might want to check first at Globe if your area has good LTE signal coverage. For the priced of Php1,999 its an affordable LTE WiFi device without any monthly bill and you can even bring it along with you to your friend’s house just in-case they don’t have an internet connection.
