Design and Built.
Starting with the design, the Huawei Nova 5T boasts a sleek and modern look. It has a 2.5D glass-like back panel with a reflective gradient pattern that enhances its visual appeal. The build quality is solid, and the device feels premium in the hand.

The placement of the physical buttons is ergonomic and easily accessible. However, it's worth noting that the glass back is prone to fingerprints and smudges, requiring regular cleaning.

The quad cameras are vertically aligned with the three primary lenses and LED flash lined up while the tiny 2-megapixel macro sensor is separated at the side, below is the Nova branding. It has a noticeable camera bump and does not lay flat when placed on the table.

It has a compact design, and the front features a large 6.26-inch Full HD+ display with a thin bezel, a punch-hole selfie camera on the upper left side, and a screen-to-body ratio of 90%, making it look huge on a compact body. It's comfortable to hold and weighs only 174 grams, making it lighter than other smartphones.

One of the neat things about this phone is the fingerprint scanner built into the power button on the right side. This is the best implementation of a fingerprint scanner we've seen, making using this feature much more convenient.

The SIM card slot is located on the left and can accommodate two nano-SIM cards; however, it does not support a microSD card which means you have to maximize the use of the 128GB of internal storage.

At the bottom is the Type-C port, and beside it are the speaker grille and microphone. Unfortunately, this phone lacks a 3.5mm audio jack, but it does ship with USB-C headphones and an adaptor.

Display
The Nova 5T's screen is a 6.26-inch IPS LCD panel with a full HD+ (2340 x 1080) resolution. The display's vivid colors and wide viewing angle make it fun to watch videos and play games. The slim bezels and high screen-to-body ratio contribute to an immersive visual experience.

The colors are subdued but have good contrast, the blacks are excellent, the color temperature can be adjusted to your preference in the settings menu, and it also offers Eye Comfort, which produces a warmer tone on the display. You can also customize the text, screen resolution, and full-screen mode for app displays.

The punch-hole camera is not at all intrusive compared to a typical notch; we only notice it when playing games because the controls are on the same side as the camera, but you can easily avoid this by rotating the phone.

Performance
The Nova 5T is powered by Huawei's in-house Kirin 980 chipset and complemented by 6GB of RAM, ensuring smooth multitasking and efficient performance. Whether you're browsing the web, playing graphics-intensive games, or running demanding apps, the Nova 5T handles them with ease. It also comes with 128GB of internal storage, providing ample space for your apps, media files, and documents.

The Kirin 980 chipset is not as powerful as the Snapdragon 885 SoC, but the Nova 5T can easily handle multi-tasking and smoothly run popular games such as PUBG, Modern Combat, Mobile Legends, and more.

On popular benchmarking apps, the Nova 5T scored 386,656 on AnTuTu and 677 single-core, and 2522 multi-core on Geekbench 5, which is good enough to handle heavy task loads.

There's a Performance mode in the battery settings, which will enhance the device's performance but will require more battery power, resulting in shorter battery life and possibly causing the phone to overheat. Until you're ready to use it, it's best to disable it.

Cameras
The Nova 5T includes a quad-camera arrangement on the rear, with a primary 48MP sensor, a secondary 148MP f/1.8 sensor, an ultra-wide 16MP sensor, a depth sensor, and a macro 2MP sensor. The front-facing camera is a 32-megapixel unit with an f/2.0 aperture.

The primary camera has three different resolution options: 12 megapixels, 48 megapixels, and a 48 megapixel AI super clarity mode. Its 9MP and 7MP Full-screen modes both have a 1:1 aspect ratio. It also has a lot of other shooting modes, such as the normal Photo, Portrait, Night, and AR lens, where you can have a lot of fun with the various 3D Qmoji and Effects.

It's also capable of shooting 1080p at 30 or 60 fps, and it can record 4K video at 30 fps. Just make sure you have steady hands or use a stabilizer or tripod since it lacks OIS.

The Nova 5T has a top-notch camera, especially considering its affordable pricing. The pictures are clear and detailed, with accurate colors. There are many different settings and modes available within the camera app.

The camera can produce great pictures when used during daylight, and taking selfies is also great. Using it for night shots is not so bad, there are a lot of colors but noticeable graininess, but hey, if you are just sharing your pictures on your social media accounts, it's more than enough to impress your friends with your photography skills using this phone.

While the 32-megapixel selfie-snapper in the punch-hole on display comes with AI and software enhancements, taking selfies is more enhanced. This makes selfies look a bit over-processed, but you can turn-off AI if you want to take a more natural selfie.

It has no optical magnification and only digital zoom up to 10x, which is only available in 4:3 aspect ratio 12MP mode. Expect low-quality images when zooming in, but it's useful for looking at objects such as signs and billboards.

Wide-angle photos are excellent because they capture a great deal of detail, are not distorted, and have vibrant colors. They are best utilized when shooting landscapes or groups. Overall, we enjoy using the Nova 5T cameras because they are ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. The AR lens is fun to use to record your own animated videos.

Battery Life
The Nova 5T's 3750mAh battery is sufficient for a full day of moderate use. It also supports 22.5W rapid charging, which allows the battery to be charged from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes. It does not, however, support wireless charging.

The Nova 5T supports dual-SIM, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, and USB Type-C in terms of connectivity. It also has a headphone port, a feature that is increasingly rare in every new release of smartphones.

Pros
Premium build quality
Good display
Flagship Processor
Great cameras
Type-C
Side-mounted fingerprint
colorful design
With Google services

Cons
Not AMOLED display
No microSD card slot
No audio jack
Lack of Optical Image Stabilization

Verdict
The Huawei Nova 5T is a worthy successor to the Nova 4, not only in terms of design but also performance. With its quad 48-megapixel cameras and 32-megapixel front-facing camera, this device could be your next mid-range smartphone. Although the absence of a 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card slot are minor drawbacks, it comes with 128GB of internal storage for your data and Type-C earphones for listening to music. It also has Google Services, so the apps you intend to install will continue to receive support, services, and security updates.

The Huawei Nova 5T is priced at ₱18,990 and its available in Huawei stores nationwide.
