Unboxing
Vivo packaging comes in a rectangular black box. The company uses this kind of packaging on its premium devices. Inside the box are the standard accessories that are nicely arranged, including the in-ear earphones (carefully designed), fast charger, premium case, Type-C cable, ejector pin, and paper materials.
Design
Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, the NEX 3 packs innovation, one major feature of this premium device is the enormous edge-to-edge screen. The 6.89-inch Full HD+ Waterfall FullView POLED display with 2256 x 1080 resolution that extends to the sides is absolutely a thing of beauty. Sure, it’s a huge device, but with its form factor, it’s going to be a crowd-pleaser.

Sure, it’s a huge device, but with its form factor, it’s going to be a crowd-pleaser.
This phone has a notch-less display with a 99.6% screen-to-body ratio now that’s impressive for a smartphone to achieve - and the front camera at the top with its new pop-up motorized systems.
Being a Vivo device, it also features an in-display fingerprint scanner. It's the next-generation In-Display fingerprint scanning technology that improves both sensitivity and accuracy. Vivo devices have the fastest in-display fingerprint scanner for unlocking the phone, and it works every time.
There is a small button on top beside the pop-up camera that functions as a power button. I'm not yet sure if this button can be programmed, it's easy to miss it since it’s small and recessed into the frame, there’s also a 3.5mm audio jack on the other side.
On the right side, it has a small groove that is touch sensitive. With an X-axis Haptic vibration motor, the touch sensor can respond with haptic feedback, which is responsive and comfortable to use.
The back has a stunning, glossy glass finish that reflects light. It’s a smudge magnet and a bit slippery to hold, but it's nice that it includes a case that makes it easier to use. Down below the device is the NEX logo.
Going to the bottom are the SIM slot (which supports dual Nano-SIM, placed back to back), Type-C port, and speaker grille. A notable feature that is worth mentioning of the NEX 3 is the AK4377A independent audio chip for the Hi-Fi experience. Now you can enjoy listening to your music collection with your favorite earphones.
Camera
It sports a triple camera system, housed on a circular module, kind of similar to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s camera. It has a 64-megapixel, f1.8 primary sensor, a 13-megapixel, f2.2 ultra-wide lens, and a 13-megapixel, f2.48 Hyper-HDR camera. It has a slight camera bump, but it's not that obvious.
Power and Performance
Under the hood, the NEX 3 is a powerful device, it’s powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus mobile platform clocked at 2.96 GHz, paired with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of UFS 3.0 storage UFS3.0 and supported by Vivo’s intelligent Turbo Write and HPB technologies, giving it 90% faster sequential read and 110% faster sequential write speeds over UFS 2.1.
Out of the box, it runs on Funtouch OS 9.1, based on Android 9.0, and packs a 4,500mAh Li-Polymer battery with 44W Super FlashCharge technology.
First impressions
The Vivo NEX 3 is an amazing and gorgeous-looking smartphone, the waterfall full-view display that extends to the side is just awesome. With its huge screen, it's an excellent device for watching media content and playing games that is more immersive. Design-wise, it has a premium build with an elegant look and feel. It’s a huge phone, and a bit heavy, so it’s not going to be easy to use if you have small hands.
The camera can take great pictures with its 64-megapixel primary sensor, and we can’t wait to use this as our primary device for the next few weeks.
Stay tuned for our full review of the new Vivo NEX 3 soon. The Vivo NEX 3 is priced at ₱39,999, and it's now available for pre-order until November 8, 2019.
