Smart the only PH Telco in Opensignal 5G Global Leaders List

Smart 5G

Opensignal's list of 5G global leaders includes Smart Communications Inc., the only Philippine operator to accomplish this based on real-world 5G mobile network experience.

A new report from Opensignal ranks Smart as a global leader in 5G video experience and for the global impact of 5G across all four metrics, including user experience (5G Video Experience, Games Experience, Download Speed & Upload Speed).

According to the report, Smart scored 81.6 in global video experience alongside other 5G Global Leaders: SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ are all 5G Global Leaders, as is AIS in Thailand and other carriers from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Opensignal's 5G Video Experience measures real-world video streams from smartphone users across a 5G network to reflect users' perceived video experience using an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) defined technique. The videos tested are from a variety of sources, including YouTube and Akamai.

Asian markets make up the majority of the 5G Global Leaders, including all three South Korean national operators along with Smart Communications from the Philippines, AIS Thailand, and other operators from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

ASEAN markets saw the greatest improvement in Video Experience using 5G, and users saw the greatest 5G impact on Video Experience, in the Philippines Smart users with a 24.4% better score while streaming videos on their smartphones using 5G. Plus, Smart saw a 5G boost of over 10% on their users’ Video Experience.

Despite all the uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Smart has continued rolling out commercial 5G networks to support the demand for mobile data. This, coupled with the growing range of 5G capable smartphones available in the market, has fueled 5G adoption.
