Honor 90 5G Camera Review: Pushing the Boundaries of Photography

Honor 90 5G

The Honor 90 has raised the bar in smartphone photography with its exceptional camera setup. Featuring a staggering 200-megapixel primary camera sensor capable of capturing amazing photos and videos.

The HONOR 90 5G promises to offer an incredible shooting experience. In this review, we delve into the capabilities of this impressive camera system and look at how it elevates mobile photography to new levels.

Here's my personal experience with the camera for daily use:

The triple-camera system on the HONOR 90 5G comprises a 200-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth camera. The cameras are arranged in an exquisite and harmonious "Mirror Luna" pattern inspired by the dynamic beauty of moon phases.

The camera app offers plenty of shooting modes and features, catering to a wide range of mobile photography enthusiasts. With modes like Aperture, Night, Portrait, Photo, video, Multi-view, and more, users can explore various creative possibilities.

Upfront there is a 6.7-inch Quad-Curved Floating display that looks really amazing. Supporting up to 1.07 billion colors, its high resolution of 2664 x 1200 brings visual content to life with amazing clarity and brilliant colors.

The 200-megapixel primary sensor lives up to its claim as the device's top feature. With its large 1/1.4-inch sensor and f/1.9 aperture, it is capable of capturing photos with amazing levels of detail and sharpness. The high resolution allows significant cropping and scaling without degrading image quality, providing users with unparalleled flexibility.

In well-lit settings, the main sensor of the Honor 90 5G captures images that are incredibly sharp and vibrant. The dynamic range is excellent, ensuring that both highlights and shadows are well-preserved. The colors are vibrant and truly come to life. Intelligent image processing algorithms improve image quality by reducing noise, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Low-light photography is also great, the large sensor size and pixel-binning technology combine to capture a good amount of light, resulting in great nighttime shots. Night mode further optimizes low-light photography, producing bright images with minimal noise.

The 12-megapixel ultra-wide and macro camera combination offered versatility in shooting both landscapes and close-up details, or fitting a large group of people into the frame. The ultra-wide lens can capture great photos with minimal distortion at the edges, adding a dynamic element to the photos.

While the macro camera delivered decent close-up shots, I couldn't help but notice its 12-megapixel resolution fell slightly short compared to dedicated macro lenses found in other devices. Nevertheless, I found both the ultra-wide and macro cameras immensely valuable, as they enabled me to capture those special moments or intricate details with ease.

In Portrait mode, the background blur enhanced the look of my subjects, resulting in more professional-looking photos. However, the depth camera's limited resolution caused minor inaccuracies in the depth map, resulting in occasional artifacts around the subject's borders.

The selfie camera on this device is impressive, boasting an exceptional 50-megapixel resolution with an f/2.4 wide aperture. The self-portraits showed an impressive level of detail. The colors were nothing short of vibrant, reproducing the true-to-life hues of the subject. The camera delivered a commendable, pleasing bokeh effect specifically for self-portraits. While the low-light performance of the selfie camera is also good, there are times when selfies appear grainy when the lighting conditions are less than ideal.

Here is a compilation of the photos we took during the 7-Day Photo Challenge that HONOR Philippines hosted using the HONOR 90 5G.

It's capable of 4K video recording and excels at capturing high-quality videos. My video footage is sharp and the audio is clear. This makes it a great device for Vloggers that are looking for a great camera with impressive audio recording capabilities.

While the Honor 90 5G camera setup offers impressive features, some notable omissions exist. Optical image stabilization (OIS) is absent, but it does have Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), which is also effective and significantly improves image stabilization and video recording, especially in low-light conditions. Additionally, the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens limits the optical zoom capabilities, relying mostly on digital zoom, which can result in decreased image quality when zoomed in.

Conclusion
The Honor 90 5G packs an impressive camera system, with a high-resolution main sensor, and versatile ultra-wide and macro cameras, making it a suitable companion for daily photography and videography needs. The depth camera adds depth to portrait photography, while 4K video recording is a welcome addition for capturing high-quality videos. However, some missing camera features, including optical image stabilization and a dedicated telephoto lens, prevent the device from reaching its full potential. Nevertheless, the Honor 90 has one of the best cameras in its category with well-rounded capabilities.
