Design and Built Quality
The BeeStation seamlessly combines a simple compact design with robust build quality. At just 820g in weight, the BeeStation is lightweight for a NAS system, making it easy to integrate into any workspace, whether it's a home or office setting.
The BeeStation presents a design that resembles a tome bookshelf. Its relatively low height of 148mm makes it compact and space-efficient. The use of hard plastic in its construction ensures durability while keeping the weight manageable at 820g. Additionally, the rubber feet at the base provide stability and help keep it in place.
The embossed BeeStation logo on each side adds a touch of branding without being overly intrusive. The inclusion of grills on the top and bottom of the device allows for ventilation and a glimpse of the internal components.
However, the lack of a visible way to open the device or access the disk drive may be a drawback, as may the absence of information in the manual regarding drive replacement procedures in case of failure or malfunction.
The front and back layout of the BeeStation is both minimalist and functional. At the front of the device, there is a single-dot LED light designed for notifications. Moving to the back of the device are the LAN port, power button, power port, USB A port, and Type-C port for connectivity options for external devices and peripherals.
The LAN port provides a reliable network connection. Additionally, the presence of a reset button offers a quick and easy way to troubleshoot or reset the device if needed. This makes it convenient when you encounter technical issues or wish to restore the BeeStation to its default settings.
Overall, the nice placement of ports and buttons at the front and back of the BeeStation is a nice user-centric design approach, making it easy to interact with the device and manage its functionalities efficiently.
Installation and Setup
The BeeStation comes with all the necessary components to get started, it includes the BeeStation unit, power adapter, ethernet cable, and a quick installation guide.
Setting up your BeeStation is quick and easy. First, connect your BeeStation to a power outlet. Then, use a LAN cable to link the BeeStation to your router, to your PC or laptop.
Next, locate the QR code on the quick start guide and scan it with your smartphone. Log in using your Google or Apple ID—there's no need to create a new account, making it very convenient. Finally, complete the setup by following the on-screen instructions. Your BeeStation will be up and running in no time.
Features
The BeeStation offers two main features designed to keep your digital life organized and secure. First, there is BeeFiles, a personal cloud where you can store and access your files with ease. Second, BeePhotos serves as a personal gallery, perfect for backing up your cherished photos. Both of these apps are available for download on Google Play and the Apple Store. The desktop app is also available for download here.
For cloud services, it supports MicrosoftOneDrive, Dropbox, and Google Drive, but no other options or any other commonly used services. It also looks like it does not support Google Photos, which would have been a nice added service.
Performance
The Realtek 1619B SoC, commonly found in TV boxes, brings powerful and efficient performance to the BeeStation. Utilizing a Cortex-A55 microarchitecture, this six-core processor can run at up to 1.3 GHz, ensuring that the BeeStation can handle multiple tasks simultaneously without compromising speed or efficiency.
While the SoC itself supports up to 4GB of RAM, the BeeStation comes with 1GB of soldered memory, which is non-upgradable. Despite this limitation, the 1GB of RAM is sufficient for typical file sharing and syncing operations.
In practical use, the BeeStation excels at file sharing from its internal hard drive, even when it's connected to two external USB drives. The device's ability to maintain high transfer speeds ensures that users can move large files quickly and efficiently. This performance is enhanced by Synology's proprietary app, which simplifies the file-syncing process, making it more user-friendly and accessible, even for those who may not be as tech-savvy.
The BeeStation Desktop application, which looks similar to the old Cloud Station tool for the DiskStation series, provides a familiar interface for tracking specific folders. This feature ensures that files written to designated locations are copied to the BeeStation. The bi-directional sync capability is particularly useful for keeping multiple computers synchronized effortlessly. However, some users have experienced issues with this functionality, indicating room for improvement in software stability and performance.
Alternatively, users can link their computers locally to the BeeStation using a (Server Message Block) SMB share, similar to connecting with a NAS box. While the BeeStation supports this method on the local network, SMB sharing is not active by default. Users must navigate through the settings to enable this feature, which may be inconvenient for those without technical knowledge. This default setting suggests that Synology aims to encourage the use of the BeeStation app, positioning the device for less tech-savvy users.
Security
The BeeStation offers security features to ensure the safety of user data and connections. The BeeStation uses SSL/TLS encryption across all connections. This encryption extends to the BeeStation web portal, BeeFiles, BeePhotos, System Settings, and even the BeeStation for desktop.
Access to the BeeStation requires a Synology Account, which offers multiple layers of security. Users can enhance their account security through several second identity verification options, including:
- 2-Factor Authentication (2FA): Users receive a one-time password (OTP) via the Synology Secure SignIn app, adding an extra layer of protection.
- Approve Sign-In: Users can approve sign-in requests through the Synology Secure SignIn mobile app, providing a convenient and secure method of authentication.
- Security Key: Users can utilize biometrics or a hardware security key for a highly secure login process.
- Email OTP: An OTP is sent to the user's email, ensuring that even if the primary password is compromised, an additional verification step is required.
- Additionally, users can sign in using their Apple ID or Google Account, both of which offer their own robust security measures, including Apple ID’s two-factor authentication.
- Local Access: For those who prefer local access, the BeeStation allows the creation of a local account with strong password requirements. Enabling local access also activates the auto block feature, which blocks any IP address that makes 10 malicious login attempts within 5 minutes for 24 hours, effectively reducing the risk of unauthorized access.
Overall, the BeeStation provides a secure environment for data storage and access. With SSL/TLS encryption, multifaceted Synology Account security options, and stringent local access measures, users can be confident that their data is well-protected.
