Huawei Pura X View: A Wide-Screen Non-Folding Phone That Could Start a New Trend

Huawei is taking a different approach to smartphone design with the Huawei Pura X View, a non-folding smartphone with a noticeably wider display than today’s typical tall and narrow phones.

Instead of continuing the trend toward increasingly elongated screens, Huawei is going in the opposite direction. The Pura X View uses a 16:9.5 aspect ratio, giving it a wider, more landscape-oriented appearance while keeping the familiar slab-style smartphone design.

At first glance, its unusual proportions may remind some longtime smartphone users of the BlackBerry Passport. While the Passport had an even more unconventional square 1:1 display, its wide body and focus on using more horizontal screen space made it one of the most distinctive non-folding smartphones of its time.

The Pura X View takes a more modern approach, combining a wide display with the hardware and software expected from a current smartphone.

A Wider 6.39-Inch OLED Display

The Pura X View features a 6.39-inch OLED display with a 2232 × 1320 resolution and a 16:9.5 aspect ratio. The wider format provides more horizontal space for watching videos, browsing websites, reading documents, and gaming. Rather than simply increasing the height of the display, Huawei is using the available space differently.

This could be particularly useful for users who regularly consume landscape content or prefer having more information visible on screen at once.

A Traditional Non-Folding Design
Unlike Huawei’s Pura X foldable, the Pura X View is a conventional non-folding phone. There is no hinge or flexible inner display. It has the familiar one-piece smartphone construction, which could make it more appealing to buyers who want a wider screen without the additional complexity and cost associated with foldable devices. The wider body also gives Huawei more internal space for a large battery.

7,000mAh Battery in a Thin Body
One of the standout specifications is its reported 7,000mAh battery. Despite the large battery, the phone is expected to measure around 6.68mm thick and weigh approximately 201 grams. That combination could make the Pura X View particularly attractive to users who spend a lot of time watching videos, browsing, reading, or gaming.

The Pura X View is expected to offer 12GB of RAM with three storage options:

The phone is also expected to run HarmonyOS 7. Huawei has yet to reveal all of the hardware specifications, including the exact chipset and complete camera details.

Could Wide-Screen Phones Become the Next Form Factor?
This is perhaps the most interesting part of the Pura X View. The smartphone industry spent years moving toward taller and narrower displays. Now, Huawei is experimenting with the opposite direction, and the Pura X View is not the only recent example of manufacturers exploring unconventional screen proportions.

Its BlackBerry Passport-like silhouette could make the phone instantly recognizable, but the bigger story may be what happens if consumers respond positively to the concept.

If Huawei can demonstrate that a wider display offers practical benefits for video, reading, gaming, and productivity, other smartphone brands may have a reason to experiment with similar form factors.

It is still too early to call this a new smartphone category, but the Pura X View could be an early sign that manufacturers are once again looking beyond the familiar tall-and-narrow design.

We could eventually see more brands introduce wide-screen, non-folding smartphones alongside conventional models and foldables, giving consumers another form factor to choose from.
