Xiaomi Explores Southeast Asian People, Cultures, and Lifestyles

Join four visual storytellers from four different countries—Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand on a journey through the lens of the Xiaomi 12 Series to Master Every Scene.

Xiaomi brings together four Southeast Asian visual storytellers to share their passions and experiences with the Xiaomi 12 Series. National Geographic Creative Works' 'Proactive Action' campaign for Xiaomi documents and raises awareness of topics important to the storytellers' hearts in an effort to generate interest and preserve their existence.

Gab Mejia from the Philippines, Annice Lyn from Malaysia, Sirachai "Shin" Arunrugstichai from Thailand, and Linh Pham from Vietnam each tell their own country's story through the eyes of a photographer who reflects the local perspective.

KM Leong, General Manager for Southeast Asia of Xiaomi International shares, “We are excited to be collaborating with National Geographic Creative Works on this campaign as we celebrate the people, lives, and cultures in Southeast Asia. Dubbed as the premium flagship of Xiaomi, Xiaomi 12 Pro can beautifully capture the visual stories of each explorer that will be a part of this campaign with its pro-grade triple 50MP camera array, complemented with Xiaomi’s advanced AI algorithm. We look forward to seeing how the featured National Geographic Photographers will master every scene.”

Proactive Action will feature a series of photographs and a short movie to highlight the diverse themes chosen by each explorer, where the Xiaomi 12 Pro will put in tests of its triple 50-megapixel pro-grade camera lenses, highlighting especially new features like as ProFocus and Ultra Night Video. The campaign incorporates a wide array of social, cultural, and environmental themes that are close to each explorer’s heart.

Gab Mejia (Philippines)
Gab starts on a journey to chronicle the cultural and natural aspects of the Mountain People of the Cordilleras (the highest mountain range in the Northern Philippines) and to emphasize the theme and significance of cultural and natural heritage preservation.

Annice Lyn (Malaysia)
Annice records the work of the Wayang Kulit master, also known as shadow puppetry. Documenting the behind-the-scenes of the tradition, the workmanship of creating the many puppets, and the performances. Annice wishes to convey the social and cultural significance of bringing families and communities together, while also preserving this art form for future generations.

Sirachai “Shin” Arunrugstichai (Thailand)
At Prasae Estuary, Shin explores one of the largest remaining mangrove forests in eastern Thailand. Capturing the positive outcomes of conservation initiatives that prevent the deterioration of this natural marvel and put it on the road to recovery. Shin portrays the rich biodiversity of this location and the interdependent links between the local community and its abundant natural resources.
Linh Pham (Vietnam)
Linh discovers the cultural wealth of Ho Chi Minh City by exploring its hidden corners not listed in travel books. Linh explores an unknown coffee shop beneath a bridge, a museum with million-year-old exhibits, a picturesque neighborhood blending Vietnamese and Chinese culture, and a tranquil fishing island in an effort to preserve the city's heritage and share it with the world.

Xiaomi Photography Academy: A Celebration of People

As part of the promotion, Xiaomi will host a photography competition in Southeast Asia titled Xiaomi Photography Academy: A Celebration of People, Life, and Culture for those who wish to show their skills and share the fascinating aspects of their lives and cultures. The photo contest is accessible to those who own a Redmi or Xiaomi phone between 14 May and 14 June 2022. Participants are urged to take the best photos that capture the essence of the theme.

The Grand Prize Winner will get a Xiaomi Smart Package (Mi TV P1 55", Mi Soundbar, Xiaomi Watch S1, Mi Standing Fan 2) in addition to being recognized as a Xiaomi Photography Ambassador. Four individuals will receive the Xiaomi Buds 3 as consolation prizes.

Learning to Master Every Scene from the Masters
Photography enthusiasts who want to learn from the master can get hands-on experience during the Xiaomi Photography Academy Masterclass to be held at the Masungi Georeserve on May 14, 2022.

The free-to-enter masterclass is open for all Xiaomi 12 Series users and they will get a chance to meet and learn from Gab Mejia, a National Geographic Photographer, who has been using the Xiaomi 12 Pro to take scenic photographs. Participants of the masterclass also stand a chance to win a Xiaomi Mi-stery Box after the program.
