Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), in partnership with Lynk Global, has expanded its Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite connectivity tests to Batangas, exploring how satellite technology can keep mobile communications available when traditional cell towers are disrupted.
The Batangas tests build on earlier trials in Catanduanes and Ilocos Norte and simulated disaster scenarios where terrestrial network infrastructure may be unavailable following a calamity.
One of the key capabilities being tested is satellite-enabled cell broadcast, which can send emergency alerts and public safety messages directly to customers' existing mobile phones. Smart and Lynk are also testing two-way SMS, allowing users to send important messages when terrestrial cell towers are unavailable because of typhoons, power outages, or other emergencies.
Unlike traditional satellite communications that require specialized equipment, D2D technology is designed to work with standard mobile phones already in use. This could potentially extend connectivity to rural, underserved, and hard-to-reach areas, while also supporting remote workers, maritime travelers, and fishermen operating beyond conventional cellular coverage.

The continuing tests are part of Smart and Lynk's efforts to evaluate how satellite connectivity can complement terrestrial networks and strengthen communications resilience, particularly in a disaster-prone country like the Philippines.
For now, Smart's D2D satellite connectivity remains under testing, but the technology could eventually provide an additional communications layer for areas where conventional mobile networks are temporarily unavailable.
