With OPPO's introduction of the Glow design into the A-series, the OPPO A96 resembles its more expensive midrange brother the Reno7 with its glossy pink color. It weighs 191g and it has premium solid built quality.

It sports two cameras on the back with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner incorporated on the power button on the right side, and the volume buttons and the SIM slot (triple tray for 2 nanoSIM and microSD card) placed on the other side of the phone.

It retains the headphone jack, Type-C port, microphone, and loudspeaker at the bottom, and an additional microphone is located on the top.

It is available in Starry Black and Pearl Pink, with the latter having a glitter-like finish and a color-shifting effect to make it more stylish. With its matte finish, smudges and fingerprints are not an issue.

The A96 is IP5X dustproof, and IPX4 waterproof, this makes it an ideal smartphone that is built for everyday use, and whatever comes with it.

The package includes the OPPO A96, a silicone case, a 33w charger, a USB-C cable, and the documentation.

Display
Unlike the previous version that has an AMOLED display, the A96 features a 6.59-inch Full HD+ LCD LTPS display, it's a bit downside that OPPO decided to revert back to an IPS panel.

It may be a downgrade but the A96 screen has full HD+ resolution (2412 x 1080 pixel resolution) with 90Hz adaptive refresh rate, 180 Hz touch sampling rate, and up to 600 nits of typical high brightness. This makes the IPS display great for consuming content and playing games.

In addition, it incorporates stereo speakers to complete the overall experience. Even when the volume is turned all the way up, the audio fidelity remains high and the sound quality is good.

Cameras

OPPO simplified the cameras with its dual-rear camera setup, which consists of a 50-megapixel f/1.8, FOV 77°, 5P lens, AF camera, and a 2-megapixel f/2.4, FOV 88.8°, 3P lens, FF depth sensor. It has a 16-megapixel f/2.0, FOV 79.3°, 5P lens front-facing camera for snapping selfies.

With HDR features enabled to capture scenery, the photo output has improved significantly with better exposure compensations and does not overexpose the majority of highlights and whites in the photos, while maintaining a good level of sharpness. Familiar vivid colors are still highly visible in daylight, and the camera performs significantly better in low light, with a significant reduction in noise.

Unfortunately, the A96 still lacks 4K recording options and only supports 1080p at 30ps. While the new 50-megapixel sensor can capture more light, the equations that aren't yet optimized for full HD resolution could have been enhanced by post-processing, but the camera performance is still acceptable in our opinion.

Video stabilization or EIS would have been a great addition, as most users have less stable hands and may find videos that are shaky and not worthy of sharing on social media.

Hardware Performance
The A95 uses Snapdragon 680 chipset with 8 cores, clocked up to 2.4GHz, paired with Adreno 610 @ 1.1 GHz for graphics, 8GB RAM, + up to 5G virtual RAM expansion, and OPPO was generous to equip it with 256GB UFS 2.2 internal storage.

Gamers will have fun playing PUBG Mobile, Special Forces 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Wild Rift, and other top-rated games from Google Play, thanks to the capabilities of the Snapdragon 680 processor.

Android 11.1 with ColorOS 11.1 keeps everything looking fantastic with vibrant app icons and a smooth and speedy user experience. It comes preloaded with OPPO's app store, from which you can download the majority of apps without logging into your Google account. An update is available to jump on the latest ColorOS 12 which gives the phone an improved performance and snappier performance.

Battery Power

Its equipped with a 5000mAh battery with 33w wired charging. Given the chipset's emphasis on power efficiency, the A96 did very well on PCMark’s Work 3.0 battery benchmark test it managed to get an impressive 13 hours and 17 minutes of runtime.

As for real-world use, it can easily get almost two days of battery life out of the phone with light to moderate use, primarily used to browse on social media, online gaming, YouTube, and HBO Go, as well as a fair amount of daily texting, emails, video conferences and making phone calls.

The OPPO A96 has a number of battery-saving features, including Sleep Standby Optimization, Power Saving mode when the battery reaches a particular percentage, and more. The 33W SuperVOOC charger takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to fully charge the battery from 5% capacity, which is surprisingly fast.

Pros
Premium Eye-catching design and built
Full HD+ display with high refresh and touch sampling rate
User-friendly UI
Good gaming performance
Excellent battery life

Cons
Still on Android 11
Cameras could be better
Slightly noticeable bezels
No 5G support

Verdict
Overall, the OPPO A96 is a strong contender with its premium design and impressive gaming performance, and long battery life. The large display with a high refresh and touch sampling rate is an advantage not only when playing gaming games but also in the overall user experience. With its retail price of ₱15,999 and the absence of 5G capability, it falls behind in terms of fast mobile connectivity which is crucial when playing online games.

If you want a less expensive 5G smartphone, the Cherry Mobile AQUA S10 Pro 5G is the better alternative with its affordable price.
