Authentication can use fingerprint recognition, Face ID, a device PIN or another supported screen-lock method.

How Visa Payment Passkey works

Unlike an SMS OTP, which sends a temporary code to the user's phone, a passkey uses a cryptographic credential associated with the device. When authentication is required, the phone verifies the user through its own security system before allowing the passkey to authorize the transaction. This makes stolen passwords and intercepted OTPs less useful to attackers.

An important distinction is that VPP protects payment authentication, not the entire GCash account. GCash has its own account and device-security controls, so users still need to protect their phone, GCash credentials and registered device.

What happens if someone knows your phone PIN?

The phone PIN is important because it can be used as an authentication method when supported by the device. The concern is not the passkey's cryptography but the possibility of an attacker compromising the account or enrollment process before the legitimate user establishes the credential.

A compromised or unlocked phone can create additional risks because the payment credential is protected by the device's security system. Users should keep the phone locked, use a strong passcode, enable biometric authentication and avoid rooted, jailbroken or otherwise compromised devices.

GCash account security still matters

Visa Payment Passkey is only one layer of protection. GCash also uses account and device controls, including Account Secure, which limits an account to one registered device. Users changing phones should follow GCash's official device-registration process rather than attempting to bypass its security checks.

If a phone or SIM is lost or stolen, users should report it immediately through the GCash app's Help Center rather than waiting for suspicious activity. Users should also keep the GCash app and phone operating system updated and avoid suspicious applications that could compromise the device.

If unauthorized activity is detected, users should secure the GCash account, review recent transactions and check any linked cards. GCash should be contacted through its official support channels, while the card issuer should also be notified if an unauthorized card transaction is involved.

Because VPP uses a device-based credential, a compromised or lost device may also require the associated payment credential or passkey to be removed or revoked through the applicable payment or card-issuer process. The exact user-facing procedure depends on how the participating service manages the credential.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

The biggest advantage is convenience because users can potentially pay through supported QR transactions using a linked card without first topping up GCash. Credit-card users can also potentially use their cards at QR-only merchants.

VPP provides another advantage by replacing much of the reliance on passwords and SMS OTPs with device-based authentication, making several forms of credential theft and interception more difficult.

The main disadvantage is that linking a credit card can make spending easier. A GCash balance naturally limits spending, while a linked credit card provides access to additional purchasing power. Users should also check their card issuer's rules because fees, cashback, rewards and transaction classification may differ from a normal direct card purchase.

Is Visa Payment Passkey secure?

VPP provides stronger payment authentication because the credential is protected by the device rather than being a reusable password or SMS code. However, it should not be considered a complete fraud-prevention system.

A passkey can help verify that the authorized user approved a payment, but it cannot determine whether the user was tricked, whether a QR code is fraudulent or whether the wrong recipient was selected. The security of the overall transaction therefore still depends on the device, GCash account, merchant and user's own actions.

Users should keep their phone PIN and GCash MPIN private, use biometric authentication, keep the device locked and updated, and never share OTPs or verification codes. Unexpected authentication requests should not be approved.
