DepEd to Receive 170,000 Apple MacBook Neo
Apple has secured its biggest education deal ever for Mac, with 170,000 MacBook Neo laptops set to be deployed across more than 16,400 public K–12 schools in the Philippines.

The deployment will cover teaching and non-teaching personnel under the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Computerization Program. The initiative aims to equip school personnel with modern computing devices to support classroom instruction, lesson preparation, and administrative responsibilities.

Apple CEO John Ternus announced the deal during the company’s Q4 2026 earnings call on November 2, 2026, highlighting the Philippines as an important market for Apple’s education business.

Apple Confirms Its Biggest Mac Education Deal
During Apple’s earnings call, Ternus highlighted the company’s growing opportunities in education and emerging markets. He specifically mentioned the Philippine Department of Education as an example of Apple’s expanding presence in the education sector.

According to the earnings call transcript published by Six Colors, Ternus said: “We recently secured our biggest education deal ever for Mac, with the Department of Education in the Philippines. They’re going to deploy 170,000 MacBook Neos to teachers and staff.”

The announcement represents a major institutional deployment for Apple’s Mac lineup, bringing 170,000 laptops into the Philippine public education system. The deal also highlights Apple’s efforts to expand its presence in schools through the MacBook Neo, its more affordable laptop introduced earlier this year.

More Than 16,400 Public Schools to Benefit
The 170,000 MacBook Neo units will be distributed across more than 16,400 public K–12 schools nationwide under DepEd’s Computerization Program. According to details reported by GizGuide, the deployment covers 169,008 teachers and 3,646 administrative officers. The rollout will extend across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The program is intended to provide educators and school personnel with computing equipment for their daily responsibilities. For teachers, the laptops can support lesson preparation, presentation creation, digital learning materials, online research, and virtual meetings.

Non-teaching personnel can also use the devices for administrative work, document processing, records management, and school operations. The reported deployment also includes training programs through the National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP), helping participating educators become more familiar with digital tools.

Part of DepEd’s Computerization Program
The MacBook Neo deployment forms part of DepEd’s broader efforts to improve technology access and modernize public school facilities. The Computerization Program provides schools with equipment and digital resources to support teaching, learning, and administrative operations.

DepEd has also allocated significant funding for additional technology equipment under the government’s 2026 education budget. According to the Philippine Information Agency, the department earmarked ₱10.66 billion for 120,000 teacher laptops and 22,000 smart television packages.
It also plans to acquire 1,000 e-learning cart packages equipped with laptops, hard drives, and internet connectivity to help schools establish computer laboratories.

The relationship between the previously announced 120,000 teacher laptops and the newly reported 170,000 MacBook Neo deployment has not been fully explained. Further clarification on the funding and procurement arrangements would help establish whether these initiatives overlap.

What the MacBook Neo Offers
Introduced in March 2026, the MacBook Neo is Apple’s entry-level laptop designed to make the Mac experience more accessible. It runs on Apple’s A18 Pro chip, the same processor family used in the iPhone 16 Pro series. The laptop features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2408 × 1506 resolution and an aluminum enclosure.

For everyday productivity, the MacBook Neo supports common tasks such as document creation, spreadsheets, presentations, online research, and video conferencing. It also comes with Apple’s productivity applications, including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. These tools can help teachers prepare classroom materials, organize information, and create presentations without immediately requiring additional productivity software.

Its battery life of up to 16 hours also makes it suitable for users who need to work throughout the school day without constantly looking for a power outlet. While the MacBook Neo is not positioned as a high-performance workstation, its hardware is designed to handle everyday computing requirements, making it a practical option for many educational and administrative tasks.

What This Means for Filipino Teachers
Providing 170,000 laptops to public school personnel represents a significant investment in the country’s education technology infrastructure. For teachers, access to modern computing devices could make preparing lessons, creating presentations, managing digital files, and accessing online educational resources more convenient.

The reported inclusion of training through NEAP is also important. Providing hardware is only one part of digital transformation. Teachers and school personnel must also know how to use these tools effectively in their daily work.

Beyond providing laptops, the program’s long-term impact will depend on how effectively educators can integrate these devices into their daily responsibilities. For now, Apple’s announcement puts the Philippines in the spotlight as one of the company’s largest education markets for Mac.
