Apple Raises MacBook Neo Price: Here's Why It Costs More and What It Means for Buyers

Apple Raises MacBook Neo Price
If you’ve been saving up for Apple’s newest budget-friendly laptop, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise. Just three months after its launch, Apple has officially increased the price of the MacBook Neo, making it the first time in recent memory that the company has raised the price of a Mac during its current product cycle rather than waiting for a new model.

The move comes as Apple faces a sharp rise in the costs of memory and storage components driven by the global AI boom. For many buyers, especially students and first-time Mac users, the MacBook Neo was attractive because it finally brought the Mac experience below ₱40,000. That has now changed.

From ₱39,990 to ₱49,990
When Apple introduced the MacBook Neo in March 2026, it started at ₱39,990 in the Philippines, making it Apple’s most affordable laptop ever. It was positioned as an accessible option for students, freelancers, and anyone wanting to enter the macOS ecosystem without spending over ₱60,000.

Following Apple’s latest pricing update, the base model now starts at approximately ₱49,990, an increase of around ₱10,000. While the increase may not seem significant to some buyers, it represents about a 25% jump over the original launch price.

Why Did Apple Raise the Price?
Unlike previous price adjustments caused by currency fluctuations or import taxes, this increase is primarily driven by hardware costs. The biggest reason is memory (RAM), the explosive growth of artificial intelligence has dramatically increased demand for DRAM and NAND flash memory used in AI servers and data centers. Companies building AI infrastructure are purchasing enormous quantities of these components, leaving less supply for consumer electronics manufacturers.

According to industry reports, DRAM prices nearly doubled during the first quarter of 2026, while NAND flash prices continue to climb. Even Apple, known for negotiating favorable long-term supplier contracts, said it can no longer absorb these costs.

Why the MacBook Neo Was Hit the Hardest
The MacBook Neo was already aggressively priced. Its original $599 starting price (₱39,990 in the Philippines) left Apple with much less pricing flexibility than its MacBook Air or MacBook Pro lineup.

Rather than reducing specifications or delaying production, Apple chose to increase the retail price by $100 globally. That adjustment translated to roughly ₱10,000 in the Philippine market after local pricing, taxes, and distribution costs.

What This Means for Buyers
If you were planning to buy a MacBook Neo, your budget may need to change. For students, that additional ₱10,000 could instead pay for:
    AppleCare+
    A USB-C hub and accessories
    External SSD storage
Several months of internet or software subscriptions

For many buyers, the MacBook Neo was appealing because it crossed an important psychological price point—under ₱40,000. At nearly ₱50,000, some shoppers may start comparing it with Windows ultrabooks or even discounted MacBook Air models.

That doesn’t necessarily make the MacBook Neo a bad purchase. It still offers excellent battery life, Apple’s premium aluminum build, a Liquid Retina display, Apple Intelligence features, and the smooth macOS experience. However, its value proposition isn’t quite as compelling as it was at launch.

Should You Still Buy the MacBook Neo?
If you need a laptop today, the MacBook Neo remains one of the best entry points into the Mac ecosystem. It still delivers the same hardware and software experience that made it popular when it launched.

However, if you’re not in a hurry, it may be worth checking Apple Authorized Resellers and local retailers. Some stores could still have inventory purchased before the price adjustment or may offer installment promotions, student discounts, or bundled deals that help offset the increase.

Will Other Apple Products Become More Expensive?
Apple has already increased prices on several MacBook and iPad models, and the company has indicated that if memory prices continue to rise, future products—including iPhones—could also be affected. While no new iPhone price increase has been announced yet, Apple has acknowledged that continuing to absorb higher component costs may no longer be sustainable.

Thoughts
The MacBook Neo was designed to make Mac ownership more accessible than ever before. Although it remains Apple’s most affordable notebook, the recent price increase changes the equation for many buyers.

The challenge is that buyers now have to decide whether those benefits are still worth an extra ₱10,000. As AI continues reshaping the technology industry, rising component costs could become the new reality, not just for Apple, but for laptops, smartphones, and other consumer devices across the market.
