OPPO Reno8 5G

The OPPO Reno8 5G was officially launched in the Philippines in August 2022. Recently, the brand released a more stylish variant in Sunkissed Beige color with higher RAM and storage capacity.

The new OPPO Reno8 5G Sunkissed Beige (12GB+256GB) is priced at ₱29,999 and it's available at OPPO Brand Stores and authorized partner dealers.

Design
The Reno 8 5G is a mid-range smartphone with a stylish unibody design. Both the screen and the body are flat, and the device is quite thin at only 7.67mm.

The flat edges not only add to a comfortable in-hand feel, but since it weighs only 179 grams, it also feels secure and does not slip easily. The color Sunkissed Beige has a metallic sheen and a gold-like brushed metal look.

It has a large camera island on the rear, although it is not as large as the Reno8 Pro 5G. The camera bulge and each lens ring share the same color as the body, creating a very attractive appearance. A protective case is included to protect the back and cameras when the device is placed on a table or flat surface.

The volume rocker is placed on the left, and the power button is on the right. A second microphone is located on the top. The bottom of the phone is where the dual nano-SIM card tray, primary microphone, USB Type-C port, and loudspeaker are located. Upfront is a 6.4-inch Full High-Definition (Full HD) OLED display.

Overall, the Reno 8 5G is a stylish midrange smartphone with a premium build. The squarish design makes it really comfortable to hold, and a Sunkissed Beige finish makes it more attractive.

AMOLED Display
The Reno 8 5G features a nice 6.43-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 2400 x 1080 pixels and a 90Hz refresh rate. It has a 20:9 aspect ratio with excellent viewing angles, and it's usable outdoors under sunlight. The screen is protected from scratches with Gorilla Glass 5 and a screen protector that is already installed into the screen.

The screen has minimal bezels, except at the bottom. However, you will not notice this after using the device for some time. It also boasts an in-display fingerprint scanner that unlocks the phone very quickly and efficiently.

Performance
The Reno8 5G is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1300 chipset, clocked up to 3GHz, paired with an Arm Mali GPU, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.

The Dimensity 1300 octa-core CPU features four premium Arm Cortex-A78 processors. Built using the TSMC N6 (6nm-class) production process, its efficient chip design allows for extended everyday battery life. Its improved AI performance and new MediaTek HyperEngine 5.0 gaming technologies provide an exceptional user experience.

Using its RAM expansion feature, which can convert storage space into virtual RAM in increments of 3GB, 5GB, or 7GB, performance and multitasking can be considerably improved. The default is the minimum allowed, however, you can simply change this under Settings > About device > RAM by moving the slider to the desired capacity.

Reno8 5G runs on ColorOS 12.1, which is based on Android 12, and it's expected to receive the ColorOS 13 (based on Android 13) upgrade over-the-air (OTA) as soon as it becomes available.

In terms of performance comparable to other devices with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, it's a very capable device for running any apps or graphics-intensive games you can download from Google Play.

Gamers will be happy to learn that the Reno8 5G supports playing Apex Legends at high graphics quality with a high frame rate, and can even be pushed to maximum frame rates and standard graphics quality. While playing Call of Duty Mobile, you can use the highest graphics settings and still have a seamless gameplay experience.

Cameras
The triple camera system on the back of the phone, including a 50-megapixel primary shooter powered by a Sony IMX766 sensor, is one of its main selling points. additionally, it also has an 8-megapixel ultra-wide and a 2-megapixel macro. The front-facing camera is also quite powerful, with a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 sensor.

Good to great quality pictures can be captured by Reno8 cameras. Photos taken with the main camera were sharp, had a wide dynamic range, and displayed accurate colors. While the ultra-wide lens can capture clear images, it often produces shots with a warmer color profile than that of the main camera.

The new Sony IMX709 sensor from OPPO is remarkable since it allows for 60% more light and reduces noise by 35%, resulting in sharper images.

AI portrait retouching is applied to selfies captured with the Sony IMX709 front-facing camera to enhance them. The 193 control points are used to identify the best features and enhance the natural beauty in every shot.

Battery and Charging
It terms of battery, the Reno8 5G's battery has a 4500mAh capacity, which is smaller than the 5000mAh seen on other brands in the same category.

Despite this, OPPO's Battery Health Engine allows it to last a whole day.

As for charging, the phone comes with an 80W SUPERVOOC charger, and it takes around 40 minutes to fully charge the battery. While the 5-Layer charging protection protects the battery from overcharging and overheating during the whole charging cycle.

Verdict
The OPPO Reno 8 5G is a solid, well-designed smartphone with a reasonable price tag. It's one of the nicer-looking phones in its segment and also feels premium to use. It delivers performance comparable to other brands on the market, with very capable cameras, and the ColorOS 12.1UI is one of the best Android interfaces today. It does lack stereo speakers, but for most users, this is not a big issue. However, this feature should have been included, considering the price and the "Reno" branding. The fast charging and longer battery life are impressive.
