With the Optical Compass and Robot Arm (OCRA) system, operators can remotely move antennas, enabling real-time adjustments. Through their Network Strategy and Architecture team, and in partnership with OCRA manufacturer HUMAX Networks and system integrator Telkha, PLDT and Smart launched a Proof of Concept (PoC) for the OCRA solution to test how this innovation can boost coverage in target areas, cut costs, and enhance overall network performance.
"At PLDT and Smart, we view innovation as a cornerstone of nation-building. By leading the adoption of advanced technologies like OCRA, we are shaping a future where every Filipino has access to reliable, high-quality connectivity, wherever they are," said Menardo G. Jimenez, PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head.
For the pilot test, Smart installed OCRA in an existing cell site targeting to serve two locations: a hospital in San Juan and a nearby high-rise condominium, where results showed the need for smarter, more flexible antenna solutions.
The system addresses long-standing issues in traditional wireless setups, where antennas are fixed in place and adjustments require physical site visits—often costly and time-consuming. With OCRA, Smart can now remotely fine-tune antenna alignment and optimize coverage in real time, reducing downtime and improving customer experience.
After installing OCRA, paired with the Vega High Gain Antenna previously tested in Dipaculao, Aurora province, Smart recorded significant improvements in signal strength, quality, and speed across both locations.
The OCRA system also allowed Smart to shift antenna coverage based on usage peaks throughout the day. This dynamic coverage ensures Smart’s network resources are used efficiently, delivering timely, stronger, and faster connections where customers need them most.
"Enabling remote antenna adjustments also reduces the need for physical site visits and helps telcos avoid unnecessary base station installations, saving time and expense. These efficiencies allow Smart to reinvest in expanding and enhancing its network, ultimately benefiting consumers," said Radames Zalameda, Head of the Network Strategy and Transformation Office at Smart.
Future-proofed network
OCRA also supports Smart’s transition toward smarter, AI-driven network optimization by providing real-time visibility into antenna direction—an essential capability for intelligent network management. This milestone strengthens Smart’s leadership in 5G while laying the groundwork for future 6G advancements.
The initiative also underscores Smart’s commitment to innovation and customer service excellence, turning cutting-edge technologies like OCRA into practical solutions that deliver stronger, more reliable connectivity experiences.
"HUMAX Networks is proud to partner with Smart for OCRA, which has proven to be an essential solution that strengthens the company's network leadership through smart network optimization," said Lee Seungjae, CEO of HUMAX Networks. "As a leading provider of innovative network solutions designed for precision, optimization, and operational efficiency, HUMAX Networks, through advanced OCRA, addresses critical operator challenges in disaster recovery, accessibility, and safety while delivering significant OPEX and CAPEX savings."
"Innovation is at the core of Smart’s mission. By introducing advanced technologies such as OCRA, we reinforce our leadership in connectivity and turn these breakthroughs into stronger services and more reliable experiences for our customers," said Marjorie Garrovillo, First Vice President and Head, Smart Brand Marketing and Sales and Development.
PLDT Group’s continued investments in network innovations help improve the quality of life of Filipinos, as well as strengthen essential services such as education, healthcare, and public safety by building more resilient communities and driving inclusive growth.
Through innovations like OCRA, PLDT and Smart are helping bridge the digital divide and bring the benefits of connectivity closer to more Filipinos, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
