Both are premium foldables with large inner displays and flagship-level performance, but the differences become clearer when you look at what matters in everyday use.
Design
The Galaxy Z Fold8 has the advantage in portability. It measures 9.7mm when folded and 4.5mm when unfolded, while weighing 201 grams. The Xiaomi 18 Fold is 10.68mm thick when folded, 5.02mm when unfolded, and weighs 219 grams.
That makes the Galaxy Z Fold8 thinner and 18 grams lighter. For a large foldable that you may carry all day, this is an important difference. Samsung’s approach is focused on making the Fold8 feel less bulky while still offering a large screen when unfolded.

For users who spend a lot of time using the large inner screen, Xiaomi’s combination of a larger battery and faster charging is a significant advantage. Samsung’s smaller battery, on the other hand, contributes to the Fold8’s lower overall weight.
Software and Updates
Samsung has the clear advantage in long-term software support. The Galaxy Z Fold8 runs Android 17 with Galaxy AI and comes with seven years of OS and security updates. The Xiaomi 18 Fold runs HyperOS 4, based on an Android 16/17 platform, with a listed four to five years of standard software support.
The difference matters for a premium foldable. Buyers who plan to keep their device for several years will get a much longer official software support period from Samsung.
