Xiaomi is taking a different approach to foldable smartphones with the Xiaomi 18 Fold. Instead of following the usual tall, narrow book-style design, Xiaomi is introducing what it calls a “mid-fold” form factor with a wider, passport-style body.
The company has confirmed a 5.38-inch cover display, a 7.58-inch inner foldable display, its custom 3nm XRING O3 chipset, and LPDDR6 memory. Xiaomi has also shown the phone with a Leica-developed triple-camera system and a distinctive red finish.
The Xiaomi 18 Fold will officially launch in China on September 7, 2026, at 7:00 PM local time during Xiaomi’s Autumn Flagship Product Launch Event. Global and regional availability has not yet been confirmed.
A New Mid-Fold Design
The biggest change is the way the Xiaomi 18 Fold is designed. Xiaomi calls it a “mid-fold” device, with a wider body that sits between the proportions of traditional large foldables and more compact foldable designs.
When closed, the phone has a 5.38-inch cover display with a wider aspect ratio. Xiaomi says the passport-style form factor is designed to make the outer screen more comfortable to use, including with one hand. When opened, the device provides a much larger 7.58-inch foldable display for multitasking, media and other tasks that benefit from a larger screen.
The design also gives the 18 Fold a different visual identity. Xiaomi has shown the phone in Nishino Red, with a flat-looking chassis, narrow bezels and a horizontal rear camera module developed with Leica.
The phone is also expected to use a new teardrop-style hinge designed to reduce the appearance of the crease. Reports have referred to the mechanism as a new-generation hinge, but Xiaomi’s full retail specifications for the hinge have not yet been published.
7.58-Inch Inner Display and 5.38-Inch Cover Screen
The two displays are central to Xiaomi’s mid-fold concept. The 5.38-inch outer screen is wider than the tall cover displays commonly associated with book-style foldables. That should make the closed phone feel closer to a conventional smartphone rather than a narrow companion screen.
Opening the device reveals the 7.58-inch flexible OLED display. The source specifications indicate a 120Hz refresh rate, with LTPO technology on the inner display and Ultra-Thin Glass protection. The cover display is also listed with a 120Hz refresh rate.
The wider internal display should also make the 18 Fold useful for productivity. The larger canvas can provide more room for split-screen apps, documents, browsing and video playback.
However, Xiaomi has not yet published every display specification, so details such as peak brightness and other panel characteristics should wait for the official launch.
XRING O3 Brings Xiaomi’s Own Silicon
The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be powered by Xiaomi’s custom 3nm XRING O3 chipset. This is one of the phone’s most important hardware features because Xiaomi is using its own flagship silicon instead of relying on a third-party mobile platform.
The XRING O3 is also designed to work with LPDDR6 memory, which Xiaomi has confirmed for the 18 Fold. The combination puts the phone at the leading edge of Xiaomi’s hardware lineup.
Recent reporting also indicates that China’s CXMT will supply LPDDR6 memory for the phone, making the 18 Fold an early smartphone to use the newer memory standard.
Pre-launch specifications list configurations with up to 16GB of RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, with 512GB and 1TB options reported. These configurations should still be treated as reported until Xiaomi confirms the complete retail lineup.
Leica Triple-Camera System
Photography is another major part of the Xiaomi 18 Fold. Xiaomi has confirmed Leica’s involvement and has shown the phone’s triple-camera system in official images. The three cameras sit inside a large horizontal camera module on the rear.
Pre-launch reports identify the setup as a main camera, periscope telephoto camera and ultra-wide camera. The source specifications list a 50MP main camera, periscope telephoto and ultra-wide camera, with the ultra-wide reportedly offering a 120-degree field of view.
A dedicated periscope telephoto camera would be particularly useful for a foldable because it gives the phone a more versatile camera system without relying entirely on digital zoom.
Some newer reports have suggested different camera specifications, including a possible 200MP main camera. Because of those conflicting reports, the exact camera resolutions should be considered unconfirmed until Xiaomi provides the final specification sheet.
Battery and Charging Details Are Still Unclear
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is widely reported to use a high-density silicon-carbon dual-battery system, but the exact capacity and charging speeds remain among the specifications that need confirmation.
The source material lists a battery capacity of around 6,000mAh and 90W wired charging as reported specifications.
However, newer reports have cited 67W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, showing that the pre-launch information is not consistent.
For that reason, this article should not present 90W charging as a confirmed feature. The same applies to the exact battery capacity until Xiaomi publishes the final specifications.
If the reported 6,000mAh capacity is accurate, it would still give the 18 Fold a substantial battery for a large foldable. The silicon-carbon battery technology could also help Xiaomi increase capacity without requiring a proportionally larger battery package.
Storage, Software and Other Hardware
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is expected to use UFS 4.0 storage, with pre-launch specifications pointing to configurations of up to 1TB. Up to 16GB of LPDDR6 RAM has also been reported.
The phone will run Xiaomi’s HyperOS software platform. The exact software version and the complete list of foldable-specific features should be confirmed at launch.
A vapor-chamber cooling system has also been reported, which would help manage heat from the XRING O3 processor during demanding workloads. This remains a reported hardware detail rather than a fully confirmed specification.
Xiaomi 18 Fold vs Galaxy Z Fold8
The Xiaomi 18 Fold will enter a premium foldable market that already includes Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8.
The two phones have similar display sizes. Xiaomi has confirmed a 5.38-inch cover display and 7.58-inch inner display, while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 uses a 5.5-inch cover display and 7.6-inch inner display.
The more important difference is their proportions. Xiaomi’s 18 Fold uses a wider mid-fold design, while Samsung retains the established book-style Fold approach.
On paper, the Xiaomi phone also has several notable hardware features, including the XRING O3 chipset, LPDDR6 memory and Leica’s triple-camera system. Reported battery and charging specifications could also make it competitive, but those details need to be confirmed before making a direct hardware comparison.
The real difference will ultimately come from how Xiaomi’s wider form factor feels in daily use, how well its software takes advantage of the larger display and how the camera system performs.
Xiaomi 18 Fold and Apple’s Expected Foldable iPhone
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is also attracting attention because of its timing. Xiaomi’s launch is scheduled for September 7, 2026, while Apple is expected to hold its next major iPhone event on September 9, where its first foldable iPhone is widely expected to be introduced. That puts Xiaomi two days ahead of Apple’s expected foldable announcement.
The two phones are expected to use different approaches to software and hardware, however. Xiaomi is building the 18 Fold around its mid-fold design, XRING O3 processor and Leica camera system, while Apple’s expected device would be part of the iPhone ecosystem.
For Xiaomi, the timing gives the 18 Fold an opportunity to establish itself in the conversation before Apple’s foldable makes its expected debut.
Durability and IP Rating
Pre-launch listings have suggested an IP68 rating, while other listings have pointed to IPX8. The source material does not consider the final rating confirmed. The phone is also expected to use a new hinge and reinforced foldable display construction, but Xiaomi’s final durability specifications and testing claims should be considered separately from the IP rating.
This distinction matters because foldable durability depends on more than water and dust resistance. The hinge, display protection and frame construction all affect long-term reliability.
Expected Price and Availability
Xiaomi has not yet confirmed the retail price of the 18 Fold. Pre-launch estimates have suggested a starting price of around 9,999 yuan, with higher configurations potentially reaching approximately 12,000 yuan. These figures are estimates and should not be treated as official pricing. The September 7 event will provide the first official pricing information.
For availability, Xiaomi has confirmed the China launch, but global and regional release plans remain unconfirmed. That means prospective buyers outside China will need to wait for Xiaomi to announce whether the 18 Fold will be sold in other markets.

What Is Confirmed and What Is Still Reported?
The most important confirmed details are the September 7 China launch, 5.38-inch cover display, 7.58-inch inner display, mid-fold design, XRING O3 chipset, LPDDR6 memory and Leica camera collaboration. Xiaomi has also officially shown the phone in its Nishino Red finish with the horizontal triple-camera module.
Several other specifications remain based on reports. These include the exact RAM and storage configurations, camera resolutions, battery capacity, charging speeds, IP rating, pricing and global availability. Some of these details are already conflicting across pre-launch reports, so they should not be treated as final specifications.
A Different Direction for Xiaomi’s Foldables
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is more than another entry in the growing foldable smartphone market. Its mid-fold design is the main reason it stands out.
The 5.38-inch cover display and 7.58-inch inner display give Xiaomi a different approach to the balance between everyday phone use and large-screen functionality. The custom XRING O3 chipset and LPDDR6 memory add another layer to the phone’s flagship positioning, while the Leica triple-camera system gives the device a strong focus on mobile photography.
There are still important questions around the battery, charging, camera specifications, durability rating, price and availability. Those details should become clear when Xiaomi officially unveils the phone in China on September 7, 2026.
For now, the Xiaomi 18 Fold’s most compelling story is clear: Xiaomi is using a wider foldable design and its own flagship silicon to create a device that looks and works differently from the conventional book-style foldable.
