The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 takes Samsung’s book-style foldable in a noticeably different direction. The wider 4:3 inner display immediately changes the look of the phone when you open it. It gives you more room on the screen and makes the Fold8 look different from previous models.

After spending some time with the Galaxy Z Fold8, these are the things that stood out in the first impression.

A Wider and Lighter Fold

The Galaxy Z Fold8 still has the familiar book-style design, but the proportions are different. When folded, it has a wider, almost passport-sized profile that makes it look more compact and balanced in the hand.

At 201 grams, it is the lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet. The lighter body is noticeable when carrying the phone, especially considering that it opens into a 7.6-inch display.

The 5.5-inch cover screen has a 10:16 aspect ratio. It gives the front of the phone a wider appearance and provides enough space for everyday tasks such as checking messages, browsing social media, and responding to notifications. That wider screen is one of the first things that makes the Galaxy Z Fold8 different.

Open the phone, and the difference becomes more obvious. The 7.6-inch inner display now uses a 4:3 aspect ratio. Compared with the taller inner screens of previous Fold models, the Fold8 looks wider and more balanced when opened.

The 4:3 Display Makes a Difference

The 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display is the main attraction of the Galaxy Z Fold8. The wider aspect ratio gives you more space when browsing websites, reading articles, viewing photos, and using apps. There is also more room for multitasking when two apps are used side by side.

The 120Hz adaptive refresh rate keeps scrolling and animations smooth. For reading, the wider screen is particularly useful. Websites and articles have more room, and the display can also be rotated depending on how you want to use it.

Samsung also improved the display with a low-reflection finish and Vision Booster. The screen can reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness under Samsung’s specified conditions. The new proportions are easy to notice because the difference is visible every time the phone is opened.

The Design Feels More Refined

Samsung also made changes to the Fold8’s structure. The phone uses a Flex Titanium display structure with a titanium-alloy film and an enhanced titanium plate. Samsung designed the structure to improve durability while reducing the visibility of the crease.

The Fold8 measures 4.5mm when unfolded and 9.7mm when folded, excluding the frame of the main display. The slimmer body and lighter weight make the overall design easier to carry. It still looks like a premium foldable, but the proportions give it a different character from earlier Galaxy Z Fold models.

Performance and One UI

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. It comes with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage, depending on the configuration.

It runs Android 17 with One UI 9. Initial use is smooth, with apps opening quickly and navigation remaining responsive. The larger display also gives One UI more room to work with. Multitasking makes sense on the Fold8 because there is enough screen space to keep multiple apps visible.

Samsung also brings Galaxy AI features to the device, including Now Brief and Now Nudge. Gemini features are also integrated with supported apps and services. These features will need more everyday use to properly assess, but having them available adds more functionality to the large inner display.

Dual 50MP Cameras

The Galaxy Z Fold8 comes with a 50MP wide camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. There is also a 10MP cover camera and a 10MP camera under the main display.

The two 50MP rear cameras give you more flexibility when shooting. The standard camera works for everyday photos, while the ultra-wide camera provides a wider perspective for landscapes, groups, and larger scenes.

Samsung also includes Dual Recording, which lets you record using both sides of the phone. Another feature worth checking out is My FanCam. It can track a selected subject and automatically reframe the video.

The camera system still needs more time and different shooting conditions for a proper assessment, but the initial setup gives the Fold8 a capable camera package.

4,800mAh Battery

The Galaxy Z Fold8 packs a 4,800mAh battery. It supports 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging. Samsung also rates it for more than 26 hours of video playback under its testing conditions.

Battery life is something that requires longer everyday use to properly evaluate. For a first impression, the combination of a 4,800mAh battery and a 201-gram body is a welcome part of the new Fold8 design.

A Fold That Gives You More Room

The biggest change with the Galaxy Z Fold8 is still the inner display. When closed, the cover screen handles everyday smartphone tasks. Open it, and the wider 7.6-inch screen gives you more space for content and apps. The wider 4:3 format is a simple design change, but it affects many parts of the Fold experience.

That makes the transition between the two displays feel more natural. Reading is more comfortable. Browsing gives you more room. Photos have a larger canvas. Multitasking also has more space to work with.

First Impression

The Galaxy Z Fold8 gives the Fold series a more natural place in everyday use. It is still a foldable phone, but the new proportions make the experience easier to understand. The cover screen handles quick tasks, while opening the phone gives you a larger workspace when you need it.

There are still some compromises. The Fold8 remains thicker than a regular smartphone when folded, and the cover screen can take some getting used to with certain apps. The larger inner display also makes the phone more noticeable to carry than a conventional smartphone.

There is plenty more to discover as the Galaxy Z Fold8 spends more time in everyday use. For now, the Galaxy Z Fold8 makes a strong first impression as Samsung continues to refine what a foldable phone can be for everyday use.
