realme Narzo 20 Hands-on Review

realme Narzo 20

realme Philippines officially launched the new narzo line with the realme narzo 20, it's a budget-friendly gaming smartphone, powered by the MediaTek Helio G85, with 1GHz GPU and HyperEngine enhancements for smooth gaming.

realme Narzo 20

The narzo 20 is the first device in the narzo series. It's an entry-level smartphone with gaming capabilities. We were able to get our hands on this smartphone and here's our review.

Design
Upfront there is a nice 6.5-inch IPS LCD display (1600 x 720 pixel resolution) with a 20:9 aspect ratio. The narzo 20 has a V-pattern design at the back inspired by the Victory sign.

It features a changing visual effect that responds to the light. It features a matte finish, which avoids the buildup of fingerprints and smudges. It's a large device, weighing 208g, due to the large battery capacity, but it's still comfortable to grip and use.

At the back, there is a triple camera encased in a square-shaped housing with an LED light that may be mistaken for a fourth lens. Additionally, it features a back fingerprint scanner for quick unlocking.

The SIM card slot is positioned on the left side of the device, just like most realme smartphones. Power and volume controls are located on the right side of the device, where they provide excellent tactile feedback.

The standard Type-C port, 3.5mm audio jack, microphone, and speakers are located on the bottom.

Overall the narzo 20 looks similar to other realme devices, it has a plastic body but is well-built with rounded corners, and feels nice to hold on hand.

Display
While watching videos and playing games on the 6.5-inch display is enjoyable, there is nothing special about the display quality. The colors are good but not vivid, the brightness level is sufficient, and the 1600 x 720 pixel resolution does the job well, we just wish that realme should have used a Full HD+ display which is way better, but with its price point, we are not complaining.

realme Narzo 20

It has an 81.7% screen-to-body ratio which is not bad, the bezels are slim except at the bottom which is a bit think, and there’s a notch at the top for the selfie camera which is not really an issue when playing our favorite games or watching Star Trek on Netflix.

Software and Performance
realme is positioning the narzo 20 as a performance-driven device. Under the hood, it’s powered by MediaTek Helio G85 12nm SoC with 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage.

Out of the box it runs on Android 10 with Realme UI v1.0 on top. If you are new to realme IU, it’s the company’s own skin with added features, like the nice realme IU skin and simple apps icon.

Split-screen mode, app cloning, kids mode, private storage, smart sidebar, and gestures are just some of the features offered by realme UI v1.0. Dark mode may be enabled across the board, and the battery-saving Super Power Saving Mode makes it even more convenient to conserve power. It's usually a good idea to check out the settings menu, as most of the features can be set therein.

The MediaTek Helio G85 is paired with Arm Mali-G52 GPU up to a 1GHz peak performance. It features two powerful Arm Cortex-A75 CPUs operating up to 2GHz and six Cortex-A55 processors operating up to 1.8GHz, interlinked by a large L3 cache for improved performance.

On AnTuTu the narzo 20 scored 202,982 while on 3DMARK it scores 703 0n Vulcan, In PCMark Work 2.0 test, it got 8,754 points. Gaming performance is more than decent, playing Call of Duty on default settings is smooth, and there’s a slight warm feeling at back after playing for 30 minutes.

We also tried Genshin Impact and Wild Rift and it also runs smoothly on default settings and even the animation looks great. We do find the lack the audio volume is not that loud so it’s better to use your own earphones for a better game experience. For Casual games, no need to worry since it can handle them easily.

With realme Game Space, you can now put all your favorite games in one place, which makes it easier to find games that you would want to play. It also comes with Game Assistant which focuses on maximizing your gaming experience on narzo 20.

On day-to-day use standard use, the narzo 20 provides a smooth experience. Multitasking is good, the UI is fluid and we did not encounter any stuttering, and switching between apps is quite fast.

The main drawback is that the 128GB model isn't available in the versions that Realme is selling locally; this would be an advantage.

Battery Performance
The narzo 20 packs a 6,000mAh mega battery with support for 18W fast charging. It lives up to its promise of long life. We’re able to get almost 2 days of standard use with its one full charge, which includes watching TV series on Netflix, and some videos on YouTube, browsing Social media apps, and playing online games.

realme Narzo 20

On our HD video loop test, the battery lasted an impressive 29 hours. Charging is fast with its included 18W charger, it was able to fill up the battery from 15% to 100% in just around 2 hours. It also supports reverse charging via its Type-C port, so that you can charge your other gadgets.

realme Narzo 20

One of the cool battery features of the narzo 20 is Super Power-Saving Mode which lets you choose six of your most-used apps active and the rest of the apps inactive to save battery power.

Cameras
The narzo 20 sports a triple AI camera at the back with a 48-megapixel f/1.8 main camera along with an 8-megapixel f/2.3 wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera. If it’s a quad-camera system the missing lens would be the depth lens or the B&W lens. The front has an 8-megapixel, f/2.0 selfie camera.

realme Narzo 20

It can take fairly nice pictures with good details, and the colors are nice. The ultra-wide lens has a standard 119-degree field of view so it’s great for taking landscape or if you want to fit more details in the frame, but the quality is low resolution but good enough to share on your social media accounts.

realme Narzo 20

The macro sensor can take decent shots and it features AI beauty, portrait mode, HDR, and more. Using the front camera to take selfies is good, picture taken in daylight are nice with a lot of details but the quality downsizes when used in dit light conditions, so just make sure there’s enough light when taking selfies.
